Type of Service: Counselling

List of Services: Family, couple, individual and group counselling, violence/abuse counselling, sexual abuse counselling, EMDR, emergency/crisis counselling

Fee Structure: No client is ever refused service based upon ability to pay. Clients are charged a sliding scale fee for service based upon family size and income. Special or changed circumstances are always taken into consideration if brought to our attention. For most clients, making some contribution towards the cost of therapy is an important treatment component. Making payment enhances self-esteem and feelings of independence, is motivating to clients and in some instances assists clients in taking responsibility for their actions.

Staff & Qualifications:

Bobbye Goldenberg, Executive Director

  • All therapists have a minimum Master's level counselling degree
  • All therapists are registered with the College of Social Workers or the Association of Marriage and Family Therapists
  • Therapists have a wide range of expertise
  • The agency does a great deal of work in the areas of trauma, domestic violence, parenting, self-esteem, relationships, etc.
  • Several therapists are trained in EMDR and EMDR with children
  • A number of staff are certified to do debriefing when a critical incident happens in a workplace or in the community. We understand that timely intervention often reduces the need for longer-term support for individuals involved in the incident.

Families and Schools Together (FAST)

  • FAST is a research-based program for children in kindergarten through grade three, along with their parents and siblings. FAST works with the entire family, the school and the community to ensure stronger, better-connected families
  • FAST provides an intensive 8-week program with 2 years of monthly "FASTworks" follow-up meetings
  • FAST has been demonstrated to have significant effects on the entire family, including increased social connections, improved behaviour at home and school and increased levels of voluntary and paid employment and self-esteem for parents

Domestic Violence

FCCCND plays an active role in the area of domestic violence. We provide programs for men who have behaved abusively and women who have experienced family violence of sexual abuse.

We believe:
  • Domestic violence is a crime
  • Abusive behaviour is learned and is a choice
  • Abuse is the sole responsibility of the abuser
  • Safety of clients, their partners and children is our main priority
  • Perpetrators of domestic violence have the right to be treated with respect

Towards Equality and Non-Violence Groups

Our 16-week men's group and our 10-week women's group offer both psycho-educational and process components. The program content includes:
  • Defining abusive and respectful behaviours
  • Identifying abuse as learned, purposeful and intentional
  • Discussing the effects of abuse on partners, children and self
  • Teaching positive parenting skills
  • Identifying the personal and societal beliefs and attitudes that contribute to abusive behaviour
  • Learning respectful beliefs
  • Holding men responsible and accountable for abusive behaviour
  • Identifying the role of alcohol and drug abuse in family violence
  • Practicing non-controlling, respectful behaviour

Couple and Family Counselling

FCCCND will not do couple or family counselling when there is abuse in a relationship.

It is appropriate and safe for individuals and couples in abusive relationships to be seen individually or to attend groups, which can support them in ending the abuse.

Sexual Abuse Support

FCCCND provides counselling for men and women who have experienced sexual abuse as adults or in childhood. Women may be seen individually or in a group setting. Men are able to access individual counselling.

Our group for women provides a safe and comfortable environment. Women explore the effects of sexual abuse on them and their families.

Educational topics include:
  • Defining sexual abuse
  • The family context in which sexual abuse occurs
  • Learning about family functioning without sexual abuse
  • How to cope as an adult with the effects of childhood sexual abuse

Outreach Worker Project

FCCCND is connected with The Region of Waterloo's Outreach Worker Project.

Outreach Workers assist families living in poverty. The service is respectful and totally confidential. Oureach Workers will link families in financial need with existing community supports to assist them in accessing food, clothing, shelter, transportation, childcare, housing and counselling. In addition, Outreach Workers can provide emergency food, gas and public transit vouchers.

Outreach Workers are located at a number of sites throughout Waterloo Region, including the following locations in Cambridge and North Dumfries:
  • Alison Neighbourhood Association
  • 76 Stanley Street, Ayr
  • The Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank
  • Christopher-Champlain Community Centre
  • Greenway-Chaplin Community Centre
  • Langs Farm Village Association
  • Preston Heights Community Centre
  • Southwood Neighbourhood Association

Credit Counselling

This is a confidential service providing money management education, consumer debt repayment plan and bankruptcy counselling.

Interns

FCCCND makes use of M.S.W. and B.S.W. interns within our agency. Interns are often able to provide small group programs tailored to client needs. They also provide excellent one-to-one counselling services under the supervision of a clinical leader. Clients are always given the choice whether to receive services from interns.
