Mission Statement: The methodology of treatment is based on agape love, teaching, as a goal in problem solving the use of faith and love in resolving marital and family situations. Genesis Three describes Adam and Eve becoming aware of their vulnerability when alienated from God, and their response of covering this vulnerability with “an apron” (a defense or protective device) of fig leaves. Essentially this represents human defenses to allay their existential anxiety (anxiety of life situations). Defense Mechanisms are impermanent, impractical and inadequate in relieving anxiety as evidenced in the “fig leaves” of scripture which whither and die, or as Freud indicated, actually create the anxiety they are intended to protect the individual from. All human defenses are substitutes to reliance on Christ and peace of Christ which comes from that reliance and which is the only real resolution of fear, “Perfect love casts out fear” I John 4. The human defenses form the basis of family dynamics and interpersonal interaction. R.D.Laing updated defenses as our own patterns of behaviour and emotions which appear to be mechanical and which are experienced as if they were invading the individual, but which in reality, the individual is causing himself or herself. The art is for the individual to see the pattern and to accept ownership of it, and then learn to depend on Christ to deal with fear through the peace of Christ received through faith. This requires the therapist to develop to a point of dependence on Christ themselves before they are competent to direct the client towards this.
