Staff Supervised Training Experiences & Professional Experiences:

We are constantly changing and have structured ourselves for continuous improvement.

Each year we focus on one large area of training. Last year it was anxiety. This year our major focus is on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Staff are all trained specifically in addictions and have speciality areas: seniors, moderate drinking, and concurrent disorders.

Mission Statement: Alcohol, Drug & Gambling Services is committed to making a difference for persons with addiction-related concerns in Hamilton. This Service stands for excellence in its unique contribution, accountability and responsiveness to individual and community need.

Philosophy - We believe that:
  • People have the right to self-determination. Clients, therefore, have the right to refuse aspects of assessment, treatment, or involvement in research or teaching;
  • Every person is entitled to available, accessible, and appropriate services provided in a way to ensure confidentiality;
  • Assessment and case-management are an integral part of care and should be multi-disciplinary. This recognizes the contributions of others in the community in providing care;
  • Optimal care requires a response to the physical, emotional, mental, behavioural, spiritual, and social functioning of an individual;
  • Procedures need to lead directly to intervention and to continue only to the point necessary to provide appropriate service;
  • Addiction-related concerns be responded to as early in their development as possible; thus a preventative model underlies our responses to addiction issues;
  • This Service has the responsibility to provide conditions which can enable individuals to make attitude and behaviour changes and to develop the self-efficacy necessary for recovery from addictions;
  • Program and professional development are the responsibility of all staff;
  • Research utilization and evaluation are essential to effective service;
  • The service has a role which includes identifying gaps in service and in advocating for the development and coordination of addictions-related health care services; and,
  • A response to addictions-related concerns requires a coordinated community effort. This Service can add to a community response through the utilization and dissemination of knowledge and through being proactive in encouraging coordination of services.

Requests for Christian Counselling: There are Christian social workers on the alcohol/drug staff. A person can request a Christian social worker at Intake.
